The Brief

FMP PROJECT BRIEF
Sophie Holt

My aim is to produce a current gen game setting for a PC platform. It should fit within the adventure/rpg genre.
The idea is an idealistic fairy tale cottage in a clearing surrounded by woods with a river running by. The cottage would act as a ‘safe house’ in terms of gameplay.
The art shall be slightly stylised such as ‘painterly’ looking textures as if set pieces for a play or an illustration from a book.
The cottage will be mainly based on the Fairy Tale Cottages built by Hugh Comstock in the 1920’s situated in Carmel, California.
I would like the place to look quirky and hand-built; the atmosphere should be calm and peaceful within the main area but a sense of unease created from the dark woods beyond.

Tools/Software:
·       3dsMax
·       Unreal
·       Photoshop

The beginning of the End

So this is my 'final major project' blog and after a few different undefined ideas, I've finally took root with one that is much clearer.

I was going to settle with a building based on Stratford-Upon-Avon; 15th century style, but I found a gem of reference images which was exactly what I was looking for.

Now, it definitely won't be to everyones taste...specifically the entire male population but I love it and I think it has great potential; I really wanted a project to be enthusiastic about and I think this is the one.

Here are the links so you finally know what I'm talking about:

Unfortunately, it is quite far away on the California coast so I just can't afford to go, or if I did I'd have to sleep on the streets which to be fair don't look that unfriendly...

I'm quite positive I can deal without the first hand reference though; there are a lot of images at hand, it would just require careful planning. The textures also look hand-painted in real life; the houses have that fake look to them because they don't fit in with 'normal' building materials and colours; so since they are already stylized in that way, it should make it much easier to realize this project.

The Scene

Just to clarify exactly what my project is; I plan to make a Fairy tale cottage in a clearing surrounded by woods. I am unsure whether to build the interior yet; it would be a lot of work and I'd have to be an architect and an interior designer too. So instead I could have quite a dense exterior with a couple of smaller focal pieces... and a river running by would be quite nice as well.
Probably shouldn't get carried away.
